“Other Voices” is a set of sound art pieces that were produced during spring and early summer of 2020 as a part of a personal art project called “Coronavirus vs Encephalitis”.

The project uses video and audio mediums to contemplate on the two dangers that are present at the moment in the area where I live (Moscow suburb town Zhukovskiy). The first danger is the COVID-19 virus and the necessity to avoid human contacts. In search for solitude I often find myself walking in the nearby forest - the only outdoor space that allows for self isolation. But there lies another danger - the insects that cause encephalitis. This danger is somewhat undervalued by public, yet according to official reports more than 5000 people living in Moscow suburbs was affected by this disease solely during the spring of 2020.

In the sound art studies comprising this release I was aiming to grasp my mental response to this extraordinary situation - a kind of strange inner “saudage” that I often felt as my mind was striving to achieve a balance between dark beauty of the loneliness and the fear of two natural dangers infused in the realities of social world and the wild...

Behind the name of the release - “Other Voices” - lies a certain artistic principle that was followed by me. When you one on one with nature and see all the inner mechanics of its existence - the commune of bugs, the structures of roots and branches, the purposeful animated sounds, - it’s hard to escape the illusion of “Self”. But also, this same kind of illusion of “The Other” emerges in the process of producing the sound art when at certain point the generated sounds seize to be merely technical structures and become “animated” - they become voices. So, when I was creating these art pieces I was mainly seeking to hear “voices” that would remind me of those other voices of the forest. The production process, hence, is a sound design improvisation that is deemed successful when I’m starting to grasp a hint of subjectivity, even though there could be no “good” musical or narrative structure. This method is highly subjective but I felt it to be very fitting in the context of the art project.
